9 Best Surfer SEO Alternatives in 2026 for Content and SEO Teams

The nine Surfer SEO alternatives worth looking at are Amadora AI, Frase, Clearscope, Searchable, Semrush, AthenaHQ, Writesonic, AIclicks and Surfer itself. Surfer has the best content editor in this comparison: it scores a draft against the live SERP as you type, rewrites sections to close the gap, and tracks Google rankings properly. The friction is that the AI half arrived as a separate product. The $59 Discovery tier carries no AI prompt allowance at all, tracking starts at $119, and AI Search Analytics is also sold on its own at $185 a month — so the editor still optimises for the engine that used to answer.

All nine, side by side

Nine tools on the five things that decide a Surfer evaluation: entry price, engines included at that price, what the price covers in brands and seats, how far each carries the work, and whether it sees Google. The engines column catches people out — Surfer’s entry tier is the only plan here that tracks no AI prompts at all.

Scroll the table sideways

Prices come from each vendor's own pricing page, checked 28 August 2026, Writesonic on 31 August, monthly list. Amadora AI is our product. Surfer, Frase and Writesonic all default to an annual toggle; the cells above carry the monthly figure.

Why teams leave Surfer

Teams do not leave Surfer because the editor is weak. It is the best content editor in this comparison: it scores a draft against the live SERP as it is written, auto-optimize rewrites sections to close the gap, and Pro adds one-click internal linking and a cannibalization report. It also tracks Google rankings properly, which only three other tools here do. What sends people looking is the shape of the AI half. Discovery at $59 a month lists 120 documents and ten tracked pages and no AI prompt allowance whatsoever. Tracking begins at Standard, $119, with 25 prompts refreshed weekly on ChatGPT alone. The five-surface coverage everyone quotes arrives at Pro, $219. And AI Search Analytics is also sold as its own subscription at $185 a month, which tells you how separately the two halves were built.

The second reason is what happens after the document scores well. Surfer optimises a page inside Surfer — the one-click internal linking works on the draft, not across your live site — so the finished document still has to be moved into the CMS by a person, and nothing repairs the links, broken pages or schema that already exist elsewhere. The editor answers a question about term coverage, which was the right question when a ranking algorithm was reading the page. It is a narrower question when the thing deciding whether you get cited is which sources an answer engine already trusts.

How we compared

We read every vendor’s own pricing page on 28 August 2026 for prices, seats, engine coverage and plan limits, and each vendor’s documentation for what it does with the work it generates. Surfer’s page ships with its billing toggle set to yearly, so the figures it shows first are the discounted ones; the monthly prices above were read by flipping that toggle, and every pair is exactly 17% apart. Frase and Writesonic default to annual in the same way.

Amadora AI is our product and it ranks first here. Its entry follows the same shape as every other one, limitations included, and every tool name links to its own site so the figures can be checked. A wider set of tools sits in our roundup of the top LLM monitoring tools.

The nine alternatives, ranked

Ranked for the buyer currently evaluating Surfer: a content or SEO team that writes to a score, still cares about Google, and is now being asked whether the brand shows up in AI answers.

01

Amadora AIBest for content and SEO teams that want the sources behind an AI answer named before the brief is written, then the page published and proved.

Our productRung 7 of 7From $59/moUnlimited brands from $179Google SEO included

Amadora starts where Surfer’s editor stops. It runs a brand’s prompts daily against the live ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini interfaces, names the sources each answer trusted and the competitor that owns them, and turns that into the brief — so the page is written against citation evidence rather than term coverage. Approved work publishes into the CMS, agents repair internal links and apply on-page changes and schema across the live site, and Search Console reports the ranking beside the AI answer.

Amadora.ai homepage
Amadora leads on finding why a client is not cited, then shipping the fix.
Key features
  • Citation evidence before the brief — the sources and competitors behind each answer, named.
  • Publishes to WordPress and Webflow directly, other platforms via plugin, API and MCP.
  • Agents repair internal links and apply on-page work and schema after the page is live.
  • Unlimited brands and seats from $179, with white-label and consolidated billing on Agency.
Pricing

Three tiers on Amadora’s pricing page. Starter $59/mo: 15 prompts, one brand, 300 credits. Professional $179/mo: 100 prompts, unlimited brands and seats, 1,000 credits. Agency $499/mo adds white-label, workspaces and API on 3,000 credits. Credits price the deliverables — 200 an audit, 40 a draft, 20 a brief.

Limitations
  • No content editor with live scoring as you type, which is the single thing Surfer does best and the reason many teams will stay.
  • Three engines on the base plans, and five more cost $9 each.
  • No SOC 2 and no on-premise deployment, which ends some enterprise procurement outright.

Best for content and SEO teams that want to know why a competitor is being cited before writing, then have the page published and proved. Not the right call for a writer who wants a scoring editor to work inside all day.

02

Surfer SEOBest for writers and editors whose drafting already runs through a scoring editor and who want Google rankings tracked properly.

Rung 4 of 7From $59/moAI tracking from $119Google SEO yes

Surfer is a content optimisation tool that added AI Search Analytics, rather than an AI visibility tool that added writing, and the order still shows. The Content Editor scores a draft against what currently ranks and auto-optimize closes the gap; Pro adds one-click internal linking, a cannibalization report and MCP. Google rank tracking is genuine. The AI module sits beside all of it as a separate meter, and a separate plan if you want it alone.

Surfer SEO homepage
Surfer now trades as Positive Surfer, leading on Google and AI together.
Key features
  • Content Editor scoring a draft against the live SERP as it is written, with auto-optimize.
  • Genuine Google rank tracking, plus rank-drop detection and a cannibalization report.
  • AI Search Analytics tracking 50 prompts daily on Pro across five surfaces.
Pricing

Monthly list: Discovery $59, Standard $119, Pro $219, Peace of Mind $359, Enterprise $999. Yearly billing takes exactly 17% off, to $49, $99, $182 and $299. Discovery buys 120 documents, ten tracked pages and no AI prompts; Standard 360 documents and 25 weekly prompts; Pro 50 daily prompts and five brand workspaces. AI Search Analytics standalone is $185/mo, $158 yearly.

Limitations
  • The $59 entry tier tracks no AI prompts at all, which is easy to miss on a page that defaults to yearly pricing.
  • One workspace and one seat at entry, where Clearscope and Searchable both give unlimited users.
  • Optimisation acts on the document, not the live site, so nothing is published or repaired for you.

Best for writers and editors who work inside a scoring editor every day and want Google rankings tracked properly beside it. Not for a team whose main question is now which sources AI answers trust, or one that needs the page shipped.

03

FraseBest for small content teams that want research, brief, draft and publishing in one tool at the lowest price here.

Rung 5 of 7From $49/moPublishes to 4 CMSsGoogle SEO yes

Frase is the closest like-for-like swap here and the cheapest way to close Surfer’s last step. It researches the SERP, builds the brief, drafts the article, scores it for SEO and GEO — and then publishes it, to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix, or onto its own FraseCMS. Its pricing page says the agent publishes on its own when you let it, and Content Guard watches published pages for decay.

Frase homepage
Frase promises SEO and AI search end to end - audit, research, writing, publishing, hosting.
Key features
  • Publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix on every plan, or hosts on FraseCMS.
  • Research, brief, draft, optimise and audit in one tool: 40 articles and 250 audit pages at Professional.
  • Content Guard monitors 10, 75 or 300 published pages for decay by tier.
Pricing

Monthly list: Starter $49, Professional $129, Scale $299, Enterprise on quote. Yearly billing is the default toggle and takes 20% off, to $39, $103 and $239. Starter covers one seat, one site, 10 articles and two engines; Professional three seats, five sites, 40 articles and Perplexity; Scale five seats, ten domains, 100 articles, Claude and Gemini. Extra seats are $29/mo, and a 7-day trial runs without a card.

Limitations
  • Two engines at $49 and three at $129 — the five-engine set only arrives at $299.
  • One site and one seat at entry, and every extra seat is $29 on top.
  • FraseCMS hosting on a custom domain is a separate $19 or $99 a month.

Best for small content teams that want the whole loop — research, brief, draft, publish, monitor — in one subscription under $130. Not for a team needing broad engine coverage cheaply, or many seats.

04

ClearscopeBest for editorial teams that want one trusted content grade every writer works to, with no seat maths.

Rung 4 of 7From $129/moUnlimited usersGoogle SEO yes

Clearscope sells one thing and sells it to editorial teams: a content grade everybody trusts. It is the least gated tool on this page, with unlimited users and unlimited projects at every tier, so a whole newsroom can work to the same standard without seat maths. The trade is coverage — it tracks ChatGPT and Gemini and nothing else, the narrowest engine set in this comparison.

Clearscope homepage
Clearscope puts ChatGPT beside Google in the headline; its tracking covers two engines.
Key features
  • Unlimited users and unlimited projects on every plan, including the $129 entry tier.
  • Content grades and Topic Explorations that editorial teams standardise on.
  • 50 tracked prompts and 50 content-inventory pages at Essentials, 300 of each at Business.
Pricing

Essentials $129/mo covers 50 prompts, 50 pages, 20 topic explorations and 20 drafts. Business $399/mo raises prompts and pages to 300 and topic explorations to 50, and adds a dedicated account manager. Enterprise is on quote. A 14-day free trial runs with no contract.

Limitations
  • Two engines only, ChatGPT and Gemini, against Surfer’s five on Pro.
  • 20 drafts a month on both paid tiers, so the ceiling does not move when you pay 3× more.
  • Grades and drafts content but publishes nothing and changes nothing on the site.

Best for editorial teams that want one trusted grade every writer works to, with no per-seat cost. Not for anyone comparing engine coverage, or a team needing volume past 20 drafts.

05

SearchableBest for teams that want the widest engine coverage and a fixed article allowance in the same subscription.

Rung 4 of 7From $125/mo20 articles a monthGoogle SEO partial

Searchable comes at the same problem from the tracker side and buys more finished writing per dollar than anything else here: $125 a month for nine engines, 100 tracked prompts per model, 200 site audits and 20 AI-optimised articles, with unlimited projects and seats. It publishes the number of AI answers behind its metering too. Our Searchable alternatives page covers the ladder in full.

Searchable homepage
Searchable pairs AI search analytics with the actions that follow.
Key features
  • Nine answer engines, selected during onboarding, on every published tier.
  • 20, 80 or 200 AI-optimised articles a month by tier.
  • Unlimited projects, countries and seats on Pro, Scale and Enterprise alike.
Pricing

Pro $125/mo: 100 prompts per model, 9,000 answers analysed, 200 audits, 20 articles. Scale $400/mo: 500 prompts, 80 articles, plus white-label reports, Looker Studio and API. Enterprise $999/mo: 1,250 prompts, 200 articles. Annual billing takes 20% off. A 14-day trial runs without a card.

Limitations
  • No CMS integration, so every finished article is an export somebody else has to publish.
  • Search Console gives clicks and impressions but never a ranking position.
  • No scoring editor to write inside, which is the whole reason a Surfer user is a Surfer user.

Best for teams that want the widest engine coverage and a fixed article allowance in one subscription. Not for a writer who wants live scoring, or a team that needs the article published.

06

SemrushBest for teams already paying for keyword and backlink data who want the AI number in the same account.

Rung 3 of 7From $199/mo1 domain for AIGoogle SEO yes

Semrush has the deepest keyword and backlink index on this page by a distance, and since the 2026 restructure it reports AI visibility beside Google rankings inside one account. For a team that already pays for it, the AI number arrives with no new vendor and no new login. Our Semrush alternatives page goes through the tier ladder and the seat maths.

Semrush homepage
Semrush, now an Adobe company, sells visibility across every channel.
Key features
  • The deepest keyword and backlink data here, with AI visibility in the same account.
  • 50 prompts tracked daily on Starter across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google surfaces.
  • AI-ready Site Audit and 300 AI visibility reports a day.
Pricing

Monthly list: SEO $139, Starter $199, Pro+ $299, Advanced $549. The $139 SEO plan carries explicit crosses against every AI feature, so AI visibility genuinely starts at $199. Annual billing saves up to 17%, taking Starter to $165.17. Additional users are $45/mo each and white-label reporting is $20/mo on top.

Limitations
  • One domain for AI brand performance at $199, and every colleague costs $45 a month.
  • Nothing is written or published — it reports and plans, the only tool here that stops at rung 3.
  • No scoring editor of Surfer’s kind; content optimisation arrives at Pro+.

Best for teams already paying for an SEO suite who want the AI number beside data they already report on. Not for a lean content team, or a roster priced as a stack of domains and seats.

07

AthenaHQBest for a single flagship brand that wants the widest engine coverage and drafts that reach the CMS on their own.

Rung 5 of 7From $295/moUnlimited seats, one websiteGoogle SEO partial

AthenaHQ is the widest self-serve engine coverage here and one of only three tools on this page that publish. Its Action Center turns a tracked gap into an article draft, and the Content Hub then pushes that draft into Shopify, Webflow, Wix, Framer, WordPress or Payload CMS, with draft-or-live chosen at publish time. Ten engines at $295 with unlimited seats has no equal at a self-serve price.

AthenaHQ homepage
AthenaHQ leads on agents that see, act and win on AI search.
Key features
  • Publishes into six named content systems, and updates existing WordPress posts in place.
  • Ten engines on Starter, including Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Copilot and Meta AI.
  • Unlimited seats with role-based access, and a free Essential tier tracking five engines.
Pricing

Essential is free with 300 credits and five engines. Starter is $295/mo with 3,600 credits, ten engines and the Action Center, and the subscription covers one website. Enterprise is on quote. API access and extra credits are add-ons billed on top.

Limitations
  • The plan attaches to a website, so a second brand is a second $295 subscription.
  • Credits meter everything, and no article allowance is published at all.
  • No Google ranking position, and no scoring editor.

Best for a single flagship brand that wants the broadest engine coverage and drafts that reach the CMS by themselves. Not for a roster of brands, or a team whose work is Google-first.

08

WritesonicBest for teams that want article production and an off-page outreach workflow from a single vendor.

Rung 5 of 7From $99/mo3 engines below EnterpriseGoogle SEO partial

Writesonic came at AI search from content generation and is the only tool here besides ours with an off-page motion: its Action Center runs on-page and off-page actions, though only Enterprise gets more than a five-action monthly trial. Growth writes 50 articles a month, the largest here after Searchable’s top tier, and its plugin publishes the post to a live WordPress site.

Writesonic homepage
Writesonic sells the before-and-after of AI visibility rather than the measurement.
Key features
  • 15, 25 or 50 AI articles a month by tier.
  • An Action Center of on-page and off-page actions, full on Enterprise.
  • Site audits and agentic workflows beside the tracking.
Pricing

Starter $99/mo, Basic $249/mo and Growth $499/mo, each 20% cheaper billed annually at $79, $199 and $399, the default toggle. Starter tracks 50 prompts daily on one project with one seat; Growth tracks 200 across two with three. Enterprise is quoted and is the only tier tracking all ten engines.

Limitations
  • Three engines on every published tier — ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews.
  • The Action Center is a five-action monthly trial below Enterprise.
  • One project at $99 and two at $499, and Search Console gives no rank tracking.

Best for teams wanting article production and an off-page outreach motion from one vendor that can live inside three engines. Not for anyone comparing engine coverage per dollar.

09

AIclicksBest for consultants and small agencies who want every client site tracked and written for on one small bill.

Rung 4 of 7From $59/moUnlimited sites at $189Google SEO no

AIclicks is the cheapest way to cover many sites at once. Pro at $189 a month carries unlimited websites and unlimited countries, tracks four models and runs a GEO Content Agent producing 15 articles a month, rising to 30 on Business. For a consultant carrying eight client sites it costs less than one Surfer Pro seat per client.

AIclicks homepage
AIclicks frames itself around actions and agents rather than dashboards.
Key features
  • Unlimited websites and countries from the $189 Pro plan.
  • 5, 15 or 30 AI-optimised articles a month by tier from a GEO Content Agent.
  • Choose three models at Starter, four at Pro and six concurrently at Business.
Pricing

Starter $59/mo: three models, one website, one country, five articles. Pro $189/mo: four models, unlimited websites and countries, 15 articles. Business $499/mo: six models, 30 articles. Enterprise is custom with all models. A three-day free trial runs without a card.

Limitations
  • Seat counts are published nowhere, on any tier.
  • No Google view of any kind, where Surfer tracks rankings properly.
  • Three days is the shortest evaluation window here.

Best for consultants and small agencies covering many client sites who want tracking and drafts on one small bill. Not for a team that needs named seats or Google data.

Best by job

Writing against citation evidence rather than term coverage

Amadora AI. The sources and competitors behind each AI answer named before the brief exists, then the page published and the ranking reported beside the citation. Unlimited brands and seats from $179 a month.

The same job as Surfer, one step further, for less

Frase. Research, brief, draft, score and publish to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix, at $129 a month against Surfer Pro’s $219. The engine coverage is thinner until $299.

One content grade a whole team works to

Clearscope. Unlimited users and unlimited projects at $129, and an editorial standard people actually trust. Two engines only, so treat the AI tracking as a bonus rather than the reason to buy.

When Surfer is still the right choice

  • You want a scoring editor that grades a draft against the live SERP as it is written. We have no equivalent, and neither does any tracker on this page — auto-optimize and Surfy have no counterpart in our product at any tier.
  • Google organic is still most of your traffic and you need proper rank tracking, rank-drop detection and a cannibalization report in the same tool as the writing.
  • You need unlimited documents and unlimited brand workspaces. Peace of Mind at $359 uncaps both, where our Professional plan meters production in credits.

The execution ladder

The execution ladder is seven steps from measuring an AI visibility problem to proving it was fixed: measure, diagnose, plan, produce, publish, fix, prove. Engine counts and prompt limits miss the thing it captures, which is how much work lands back on your team. Every platform here climbs the same seven steps and each stops somewhere.

Scroll the table sideways

Rung placements reflect what each vendor documents publicly, re-read 28 August 2026. Frase moves from 4 to 5: every plan on its pricing page lists "Publish to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix, or host on FraseCMS", and the page states the agent publishes on its own when you let it. Surfer stays at 4 — its 1-click optimisation and 1-click internal linking act on a document inside Surfer rather than on a live site, and AI Search Analytics is measurement only. Writesonic moves from 4 to 5: its own plugin publishes into a live WordPress site. Semrush is the one tool here that stops at 3: it reports and plans, and nothing it produces is written for you.

Eight of these nine produce something, so rung 4 no longer separates anyone — Semrush is the lone holdout, and that is positioning rather than a gap. The step that thins the field is publishing, and it is worth noticing which tools clear it: Frase at $49 and AthenaHQ at $295, neither the most expensive product here. Above that the field empties. Nothing else repairs internal links, broken pages or schema across a live site once the article is up, and only four of the nine report a Google ranking position at all — so the question Surfer’s editor was built to answer is still the one most of this category answers best.

Migrating off Surfer

Very little is locked in. Documents export from the Content Editor, and the tracked prompt list is small enough to retype — 25 at Standard and 50 at Pro, against the hundreds most trackers here allow. Historical visibility scores do not carry across either way, because every vendor samples a different number of responses per prompt. Anything already published is already yours; Surfer never held it.

Monthly billing is offered on every tier, so unless you took the 17% annual discount there is no contract to run down, and the clean sequence is one month in parallel. The comparison worth making is not the content score, which every tool computes differently and none can validate against another. Take one page you already published through Surfer, then ask the new tool which sources the AI answers in your category cite and whether that page is among them. That is what the editor was never built to answer.

Common questions

How much does Surfer SEO cost?

Surfer is $59 a month for Discovery, $119 Standard, $219 Pro and $359 Peace of Mind, with Enterprise at $999 (vendor pricing page, August 2026). Yearly billing takes exactly 17% off each, so Discovery falls to $49. AI Search Analytics is also sold on its own at $185 a month, $158 yearly.

Does Surfer SEO track AI search visibility?

Yes, from the $119 Standard tier upward — the $59 Discovery plan carries no AI prompt allowance at all. Standard tracks 25 prompts refreshed weekly, Pro tracks 50 daily across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini, and Peace of Mind tracks 100 daily.

Does Surfer publish content to my CMS?

No. Surfer optimises a document inside its own editor and pushes it out through integrations or an export. Frase publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix on every plan from $49, and AthenaHQ reaches six content systems at $295, so both close a step Surfer leaves open.

What is the best Surfer SEO alternative for content teams?

Frase, on price and scope: $129 a month for Professional buys 40 articles, three engines, five sites and publishing to four CMSs, against $219 for Surfer Pro. Clearscope is the better call if a single trusted content grade matters more than breadth, at $129 with unlimited users.

Which Surfer alternatives track Google rankings too?

Amadora AI, Frase, Clearscope and Semrush all report Google organic performance alongside their AI work, as Surfer does. Searchable and AthenaHQ read Search Console for clicks and impressions without reporting a position. AIclicks sees no Google data, and Writesonic reads Search Console without a position.

Can I move off Surfer easily?

Yes. Documents export from the Content Editor, and the tracked prompt list is small enough to rebuild by hand — 25 prompts at Standard, 50 at Pro. Monthly billing is offered on every tier, so unless you took the 17% annual discount there is no contract to run down.
